Stem cells are the body’s repair system

  • The simplest and most compelling therapies use your own cells to heal damaged body tissues. Cell are harvested, expanded and returned to the body. They are returned with a local injection or a transfusion, in the same way as a blood transfusion. The cells have the ability (in fact, it is their function) to find and repair sites of damage.
  • The cells can be used to grow tissue and, in some case, whole organs. This is done in the lab and requires a transplant operation.
  • The stem cell transfusion can repair a damaged organ (like heart muscle) inside the body, potentially eliminating the need for surgery.
